In WW2 two ruthless leaders on the Eastern Front, sent their armies into a meat grinder. Both leaders were familiar with the technology used in WW1, yet they declined to use chemical and biological weapons on the battle fields of Eurasia.

I'll like to read more about that. We all know about the horrors of WW1. But how were Hitler and Stalin able to restrain themselves using from WMDs?

The weapons that will gain attention in the next 15 to 25 years(my prediction for the next “big one”) will be a variety of conventional missiles, that will terrorize people, air travel, sea travel, and cities.

Most likely we'll see something like Vietnam War or what's happening in Syria or Ukraine right now. Great powers such as USA, Russia and China might attack each other but mostly by proxy. We will see special forces. Drones. Plenty of places to stir things up. But it's unlikely to be conventional like what we saw during both World Wars.

I have no idea why British and American historians can’t explain why Hitler & Stalin exterminated civilian domestic enemies, but ‘played ball’ with the Geneva Protocol & Hague Conventions during WW2.

My suspicion is the average Russian or German civilian had no power in a fascist or communist government. However great powers like the British, French(till they were conquered in 1940) and Americans had a number of political, economic, media, and military weapons at their disposal, to deal with Russia and Germany if they used wmd’s.

My position on Hitler and Stalin not using wmd’s, is they didn’t want to “open a can of worms” that could destroy their respective nations.

“But it’s unlikely to be conventional like what we saw during both World Wars.”

I hope you are correct about proxy wars, being the future and not showdowns with great powers. Many people think because of nuclear weapons it would be suicidal.

However, I’m going with a contrarian point of view from a historical perspective.Great nations with the proper amount of chauvinism:

“Always mix it up,” regardless of the consequences.
