“I’d expect people over 80 to be likelier to have a reduced immune response in general”

That is one of the hallmarks of aging - very pronounced by 80, on average.

The shrinkage of the thymus gland in the elderly is measurable, and pronounced.

I was just lucky. My state has a Trump hating RINO Governor who's almost as stupid...and murderous...as Cuomo or any other Governor. I went to a "mass vaccination" site a day or two before I got my shot wanting to be put on an "on call" list in case there were any left over doses at the end of the day. A day or two later I,to my surprise, got a call from a number I didn't recognize.I usually allow such calls to go to voicemail...but I answered it.

"Can you be here in 20 minutes?" asked the caller after having identified herself. I lived 3 miles away so I said yes.

The rest is history.

Unless I'm mistaken you either have to know someone...or be lucky...in some states. Like mine. Other states are well governed and luck isn't required.

Do any of you who were successful in getting appointments, have any helpful tips for Freepers who have not yet broken the code on how to get them?

Do you have Rite Aid in your state? If so, go to the Rite Aid website between 11:45 PM and 12:00 AM - that's when they start opening up appointments for roughly a week out. Don't just check near your house - I had to go roughly an hour outside of our area to find anything. And I only heard about availability at that location through a "Vaccine Hunters" Facebook group that wife heard about on NextDoor.

Many cities seem to have a Facebook group like this. Suggest looking in your area to see if there's one near you. That's where I first heard that Rite Aid is part of a Federal (apparently not State - at least here) program for vac distribution.

CVS, Walgreens, Kroger, etc are other places you can look. As are smaller pharmacies, Urgent Care centers and other less obvious places.

I did learn that you have to be proactive and aggressive in looking - don't just wait for whatever lists you are already on (county, local hospitals, etc) to schedule you. (That's what we WERE doing until I learned of these other options). The best and fastest way to get an appt is to proactively look for one. Here's an article from the WSJ that might help..

I had no idea there were that many stupid people in this country willing to take a shot of something they have no idea what the effects could be later down the road.

I’ll have to dig it up for you. I know I read it so maybe it’s in my browser cache. But it is very early for everyone other than those who were in the initial trials. They did not measure antibodies, they were measuring hospitalization rates among those who received the vaccine, I think it was out of Scotland. Not peer reviewed, and it could have plenty of its own biases and flaws. AFAIK, other than the annual flu shot (which they have a year or more to prepare for every year, and with varying degrees of success each year), no effort like this has ever been tried. There are bound to be a lot of new discoveries and unexpected turns simply because these vaccines did not have to run the full gamut of CT safety and efficacy testing usually required of new drugs. Not implying it is unsafe, I’m just a curious observer and long time biotech investor. Not a doctor or researcher by trade. I find it all fascinating on an intellectual level. And I hope they do find other great uses for mRNA tech.

Its like watching the movie stepford wives. I have yet to know of anyone in my circle who ever got the so-called virus. I’m looking around at brainwashed people and yelling snap out of it! Its the freaking flu

Well they put a big fright into a lot of people. What bothers me is that these same people who fostered fear all year are now touting the antidote to assuage that fear. It has all the elements of charlatanism (or gaslighting).

I am not casting aspersions on the vaccine developers but on the administrative agencies and institutions. These are the same people who didn’t replenish stockpiles of PPE a decade ago (even though it is their job). That moron CDC director Redfield testified before congress that a little blue medical mask is better than a vaccine despite all evidence that the virus was roaring back even with mask mandates in place. They did almost no research on potential off the shelf treatments, and even went out of their way to withdraw use, pull drugs from shelves and even demanded pharmacies rat out doctors who were writing for some drugs that some people believed may help fight off infection. It’s like we’ve been corralled into believing there is only one way to win this war. I don’t know the answer I just know I am very disappointed in the process.

For those interested, call around to the local clinics and hospitals. I know that some are giving the mRNA vaccines on a “no guarantee, first come first serve” basis at the end of each day. That is because once the glass vials come out of the deep freezers they can’t go back in; and there are always people who cancel or don’t show up or the clinic has some doses left over. Rather than throw them away they are offering those overages to whomever is there waiting. YMMV.

I knew someone. Got me an appt for shot I had no intention of getting but got it because when I take days off in May for a vacation, my district can’t give me shit or make me quarantine without paying me for it. No co-morbidities, just knew someone. Funny how that works.

Know someone or luck out with stand by appts. Or some have no issue at all getting it.

Son in law and his fam are all diabetics, from childhood, and can’t get an appt. Yet here I could, in NJ, with no medical issues, because I knew someone who signed me up when appts were released last Wednesday and appt was this past Monday. I work in education and our appts aren’t opened until next week. It’s all about who you know in NJ.

Yep! It’s amazing.

I don’t even get flu shots.

Got this one because I plan on vacationing in May and my district sucks so this gives me cover. Plus, I’m 58 and don’t care about side affects. Glad most of my kids aren’t getting it now.

It’s really not about health.

This may not be the study I read, but it is commentary on the study.

https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-preprint-from-scotland-looking-at-hospitalisations-in-scotland-and-vaccinations/

“For Pfizer/BioNTech, vaccine effectiveness (VE) for reducing COVID-19 hospitalizations peaked at 28-34 days after Dose 1 at 85% (95% CI: 76 to 91); thereafter reduced to 66% (95% CI: 57 to 76) at 35+ days after Dose 1.”

Even in this group here, of Freepers. It’s shocking to me.

These vaccines are illegal in the United States. I know nobody is thinking of it that way, but it’s true. The vaccines have been given Emergency Use Authorization (EUA), true, but EUA has never before been abused in this way in such a massive scale.

These vaccines are NOT approved by the FDA, they have not even gone through animal tests. They have only been allowed via EUA. Once the emergence is over (although it may never be declared over), these vaccines are once again *illegal* - unless and until they go through the regular FDA approval process that every other vaccine must go through. There’s a reason vaccines take 10 years to bring to market - because it’s insanity to *not* review them for long-term side effects.

I concur. That is how I got mine. CVS had to throw out 8 doses the day before, and my company is next door, so we worked out a deal. At the end of the day, they just let us know how many leftover shots they have, and we send that many people over. Once you have your first shot, you can register for the second online. I am only 39, so wouldn’t have been eligible otherwise.
