NEW: House Democrats have introduced a bill to give Puerto Rico statehood (H.R. 1522), which would give Democrats two more Senate seats and multiple House seats -Politico
D.C. on the other hand, is a non-starter. Once Puerto Rico gets in, that will give Democrats +2 in the Senate. Joe Manchin will say no way to D.C. So that will be the end of it, I believe.
Please tell us which November election Pierce is urging the “gullible voters” to Boycott in his December 4, 2020 tweet? Is this early planning for Nov. 2022?
“If Republicans were smart, they would tap into the dominant conservatism of the island.”
Unfortunately, there are segments of both major parties which are contaminated with conscious and unconscious racism. Both PR and DC statehood efforts are tainted by racist thinking. Now that DC is only one half black and that ratio shrinking, there is a stronger chance for DC statehood. Despite PRs religious and family values orientation the racism issue is a high hurdle to overcome. As you point out this article has been posted twice. I did not check if the same person posted twice, but it is obviously very important to somebody(s). The question is why. I doubt it is because they cherish the no taxation without representation issue, otherwise DC ‘s situation could have changed many years ago.
guam has fewer than 100,000 people. Probably not enough to be a state. DC has 700,000+, more than Wyoming and Vermont. Why should those states have the right to vote how their tax money is spent, but not DC? PR has more people than West Virginia, but only pays some Federal taxes. So what ia fair if you believe in what our ancestors fought for, no taxation without representation?
You got to wonder what a $15/hr minimum wage would do that that “new state’s” economy?
Not November. The GA senate runoffs of course. And, along with the mail-in cheating, it worked.
Thanks, that makes sense. You don’t think that an angry Stacy Abrams mobilizing the minority vote using legal voting channels wasn’t enough to get the job done? Especially if Trump voters were convinced to boycott? Is mail-in cheating for that election being litigated?
Possible, but if legal mail-in votes were suffcient, why did they make sure that there was no real no real verification of the ballots (and "they" includes GOP characters)?
I visited Puerto Rico once. It smelled intensely of rotting garbage.
If crap “county states” like DC get 2 senators shouldn’t large states get more senate seats?
If a mini-state like Rhode Island with 1 million population gets two senators, shouldn’t Texas and Florida with a combined population of 50 million get 100 senators?
A country with 300 million population should have at least 600 senators.
Dems use the nuclear option immediately, then cry when they are out of the majority that the GOP is mean so the GOP backs down.
“I visited Puerto Rico once. It smelled intensely of rotting garbage.”
If the democrats and their rino pig allies pull off their sleazy land grab in PR, there will be only one way the large population of Puerto Ricans opposed to statehood can regain their independence.
Then the island will stink intensely of rotting bodies - of guerrillas and soldiers.
The Cubans, Norks, Venezuelans, Iranians, Chicoms and gawd knows who else will gleefully support the cause of PUERTO RICO LIBRE! with lawyers, guns and money against the Imperialist US Colonial Aggressors.
A horribly stupid idea worthy of the diseased democrats and their rino buttwarts.
The midterms. They are not taking any chances if their election fraud fails, so they are going into overdrive to wreak as much destruction as they can and give themselves as much power as they can, and meanwhile the RINO party just sits back and goes duh duh duh duh as these scumrats lead us further and further into tyranny. Just think: This is just two months. We have 22 more to go!
“As others said, I think the offer has always been there, but PR has said no thanks.”
There is good reason why in 120 years the US avoided such a blatantly obvious colonial landgrab.
If this mad adventure kicks off expect a guerrilla insurgency in PR - and later in Hawaii.
The democrats are going to set the world aflame.
The numbers for the two houses was a Constitutional compromise. House gives strength to cities. Senate gives strength to rural states. Don’t try to second guess our founding fathers. Sorry old pro, I clicked the wrong comment.
I can imagine what the Founding Fathers would say about “liberating” PR from Spain in order to colonize it.
This is a shameless land grab by brute force like the annexation of Hawaii.
PR should be given independence like Panama, Cuba and the Philippines.
If we give PR independence, they will likely soon be under the thum of Cuba, Veneuela, and Putin. If a majority of people in PR actually vote for independence then we should give. Fortunately, such a vote is extremely unlikely.
Oh yeah that’s right let’s be like the Soviets and “liberate” small countries so that commies can’t pick on them.
Who do you think you’re fooling rino boy?
Stop posting to me.
A vote by Puerto Rico citizens should be taken—using mail-in ballots, of course.
No, they have gotten down to business.
Don’t the states have to agree to this?
