One of the most vivid memories,of my *many* vivid memories,is from an experience I had in Tanzania about 40 years ago. Driving from Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater involved mainly empty desert featuring an occasion ostrich. We came upon a woman with a young child. Couldn't tell the age (or the sex) of the child but my guess is around 10. This child had reddish/orange hair,a huge belly and little stick legs.He/she literally looked to be at the brink of death.I found out later that those were the classic signs of desperate,long term,malnutrition.
I can't recall how much money I had on me but I wish I had given her some money...$50 dollars would have represented about six months income. But I didn't...because I was so shocked by what I was seeing and the guide only stopped for about 30 seconds to talk to the woman.
As ugly as starvation looks in a photo it looks 100 times worse when you're about 5 feet from it.
Just sayin'...
