Washington D.C. could be made part of Virginia and Puerto could become part of Florida.

Anyone believe the people of puerto rico want to be a state and pay federal taxes?

Sounds like the people of P.R. are just like the people in the rest of the states. Which state's people want to pay federal taxes?

Present PNP Party after the Nov 2020 election in PR is what I’d call Republican-lite. Fair number of issues would be conservative but a few liberal points. Very religious region.

PNP Party in Jamaica is fairly liberal and you may be thinking of them.

As I said before, give Puerto Rico her independence.

first Puerto Rico. However, many don’t want it, they want independence.

Then Washington DC. They will have to change their name. However, this will open up the discussion of moving the federal capital out of the slums of DC. As a state, it will no longer have exclusive rights to the designation as the Country’s capital. Buildings be damned.

How about Guam and American Samoa?

And with it, kiss goodbye to the Stars and Stripes, because if they have to go through the process of changing the flag anyway, they will say, it’s time to make the US Flag more “inclusive”.

A considerable percentage of Puerto Rico residents already pay taxes. Puerto Rico sends more in federal income taxes to D.C. than 6 states do. Most of the rest likely make too little to pay much in the way of income taxes after deductions and tax credits. Income tax will be the last reason for not becoming a state.

So what will Republican reasons for voting to not make them a state be?

They employ a few locals but that contributes nothing positive to the USA.

I can think of about a dozen states that meet that description.

If PR wants to be a part of the US, just make them a part of New York State, or even a borough of NYC.

There are no federal income taxes paid by PR whose income comes from PR

Anyone whose income comes from anywhere else owes US fed taxes like other US citizens

They're already part of the U.S. and they want to be a state. I suspect it'll happen.

PR does not pay Federal income taxes. On the other hand DC pays more than many states. Other thoughts and facts to consider. Low wages mean many from PR would owe no IRS taxes. Voting for ststehood in PR has been underwhelming. In DC residents voted about 70% for a controversial constitution promoted by the mayor. DC and MD are both opposed to a shotgun wedding. It would make as much sense or more for DC to get its piece back from Virginia as it was removed because the people there wanted to keep their slave market when DC got rid of theirs, probably because of the diplomatic optics. The Tennessee option might work for DC. An independent PR would be tempting to Cuba and Venezuela and their supporters. People in PR have been known to vote for Republicans. People in DC have rejected Socialist candidates rather consistently in recent years.

Consider PR as independent. What would Cuba and Venezuela do? What would Russia do, etc., etc. It would make sense to put laws in effect to support pharmaceutical and other industries, as PR had before Clinton. Also there is some law that causes shipping goods to this island more costly, change that one too. Probably some PRs on the mainland would move back affecting voting in some states and Congressional districts. How would that change the political scene on the mainland?

DC has already solved the name issue. The recently approved draft DC constitution outlines a specific area which includes the White House, the Capitol and most of the Federal buildings and monuments. The rest which also happens to have more people than Wyoming and Vermont will contine to be DC for Douglass Commonweqlth for abolishionist Frederick Douglass. DC is fast removing its slums with galloping development and gentrification. The black population will soon be less than half, unlike a few decades ago when it was 70%. AS of the 2010 census American Samoa had well under 100,000 people and Guam well under 200,000. DC has over 700,000 and at the rate it is going may soon have more than North and South Dakota and Alaska. While we are at it, why not incude the US Virgin Islands with PR if it does become a state, like Hawaii and its islands.

The only question is what argument the Republicans will use to vote against statehood for Puerto Rico, D.C., and eventually the Virgin Islands.

The real argument is fear of more Dem votes in Congress. The PR argument will be the PR govt finances are in the toilet. This is no longer true in DC. Arguments about corruption may be tried, but why, for example, is DC less entitled to vote on how their tax money is spent than people in Illinois or New Jrsey?

Of course it is.

The PR argument will be the PR govt finances are in the toilet.

So are Illinois'.

This is no longer true in DC. Arguments about corruption may be tried, but why, for example, is DC less entitled to vote on how their tax money is spent than people in Illinois or New Jrsey?

They'll try and make a case that the it's unconstitutional but they can just carve out the Capitol, White House, Mall, and a few other buildings into a 'district' and that'll cover the Constitutional requirement.
