Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on Monday criticized certain Democrats for failing to support progressive demands for a $15 minimum wage, contending they are living in a “dystopian capitalist nightmare” and adding that the minimum wage should actually be $24 an hour.

Yeah. And why not 50? 100?
What she is really saying is for the government to take over all businesses and be the sole employer, and to pay people what the government thinks is right. Communism. It was tried and failed.

If we followed official inflation figures, the original 1938 minimum wage of $0.25 per hour would be $4.67 now. Was it possible to live and support a family on 25 cents per hour back then?

All you gotta do is wait. Minimum wage will get there.
My first job was in a plastics manufacturing factory. I got $1 per hour and the work was hot and dirty.
My second job was in the Navy and I got $78 per month.

We’re all going to be paying $15 for a loaf of bread soon.
...and not long after that, $150.

In the year 1945, the United States minimum wage was $0.40.
So in 6 years the min wage almost doubled. Those wily Republicans....

Every regulation is fascism then...
Potentially, yes. That’s what makes it so squishy. I’ll give an example:
A government tells a producer of shower heads that they must withstand a certain water pressure to ensure people are not injured by weak fittings. That’s not fascism.
A government tells producers of shower heads that they must only release a certain amount of water volume in order to preserve water. That’s fascism.
But then, people disagree about that sort of stuff.
It’s squishy.

With all the taxes, unemployment insurance, workers compensation insurance, accounting costs, etc., it costs an employer at least $24 an hour to pay someone $15 an hour.

Ok Republicans can be plain stupid because I know a lot of them think if the min wage increased 50% then EVERYTHING goes up 50% at retail. This is plain stupid.

$10 a gallon milk, a dozen eggs for $7, a loaf of bread for $6, $9 gas and the cheapest big city efficiency apartments will go for north of $2k a month. I think those are already the price of things in San Francisco and Hawaii - parts of California too!

The cost of living varies significantly from place to place. It costs way more to live in NYC then it does in OKC for example. That's why the federal government should not institute a minimum water. $7.25 per hour might work fine in OKC while in NYC it should be $15.00 per hkhe

What other ill-advised and economically destructive things would you also like the Republicans to pass? Maybe a basic universal income? How about Medicare for all?
Nobody wants a minimum wage except for Leftists. Why are you so emotionally invested in this poor and discredited concept?

What is scary is the fact that she has a BA with majors in International Relations and Economics. If this is the mentality coming from our schools, we are doomed.

President Eisenhower on the minimum wage:
Ike grew up poor and empathized with workers. He wanted to protect the rights of workers to join a union and bargain collectively. He said, “I have no use for those, regardless of political party, who hold some vain and foolish dream of spinning the clock back to the days when organized labor was huddled, almost a hapless mass. Only a fool would try to deprive working men and women of the right to join the union of their choice.” (Smith, Eisenhower in War and Peace)
He regarded workers as he regarded soldiers in that “they have a job to do for the nation.” (Kreig, Dwight D. Eisenhower: Soldier, President, Statesman)
He raised the minimum wage for two million workers to $8.15 in today’s dollars. He would extend the minimum wage for as many people possible while remaining practical. (Smith, Eisenhower in War and Peace)
I hate unions. A higher minimum wage always reduces pressure for the unskilled to unionize.

R’s better get onboard to an MW increase. I’d say counter with $10 and settle at $11 or $12. I say counter with eliminating the minimum wage entirely, and let a free market set wages...
...with horrific penalties for hiring anyone not legally in the country!

AOC gets nuttier every day. A $50k per year “minimum” wage?
To: Bon of Babble
Why not a minimum wage of a Trillion. That way nobody would have to work.
