How climate change paved the way to war in Syria

Researchers agree that climate change alone cannot be blamed for the outbreak of war in Syria in 2011. However, neither can it be ignored as a reason the once blossoming country has become a parched, war-torn place.

"Syria serves as prime example for the impact of climate change on pre-existing issues such as political instability, poverty and scarce resources," Jamal Saghir, Professor at the Institute for the Study of International Development at McGill University, told DW. Saghir, a former director at the World Bank, considers climate change the world's biggest threat to security. He therefore sees the recent acknowledgment of climate change as a national security issue by US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd J. Austin III, on January 27, as game changer when it comes to recognizing the link between climate change and conflict.

"Climate disruption was an amplifier and multiplier of the political crisis that was building up in Syria," as Staffan de Mistura, former UN Special Envoy for Syria between 2014 and 2018, told DW. The crisis was aggravated by Bashar Assad's decisions to reduce fuel, water and food subsidies over the years. In addition to water scarcity in rural areas, tensions rose between Kurds, Arabs, Alawites and Sunnis.

"A toxic cocktail started to turn into an explosive mixture with the ingredients of the Arab Spring, the anger of losing jobs, migration to cities, as well as the purchasing power decline and the anger against the very tough and very cruel reactions by the government," de Mistura said.

You know what they say about non sequiturs?
In a strong wind even turkeys can fly.

“”Syria serves as prime example for the impact of climate change on pre-existing issues such as political instability, poverty and scarce resources,” Jamal Saghir, Professor at the Institute for the Study of International Development at McGill University”

The BEST WAY to fight this is to give them their presumption (that CO2 emissions are destroying the world), and then say stuff like:

“So, is he suggesting that we nuke China, since they are already, by far, the largest CO2 polluter in the world, and they have no plans to stop building their coal plants? Otherwise, nothing we do matters.”

I guess that all this global warming er climate change uh make that climate disruption is what is causing all the famine and hardship for the Israelis too. Since they are Syria's neighbors and share the same climate. The only explanation can be this climatey changey stuff since they have always been such a peaceful bunch in Syria. It's not like they have ever had a war over there before.

An amplifier and multiplier! SILENCE! Sorry, I meant: SCIENCE!

The Syria "climate change" story is a lie. Simple writeup: http://euanmearns.com/drought-climate-war-terrorism-and-syria/ Science paper on the topic: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0962629816301822

Researchers agree that climate change alone cannot be blamed for the outbreak of war in Syria in 2011. I wonder how much of the war was attributed by these elite researchers to obama, his muslim brotherhood buddies and hillary clinton. Oh, no, those couldn't have anything to do with it. It was one degree to warm. Yeah, that's the ticket.

I’m sure it was Climate Change. The corrupt government there had nothing to do with it.

Actually, it was the reforms, especially the agricultural reforms, demanded by the IMF which led to scarcity and poverty and instability. Of course the director of the World Bank is blaming “climate change”.

Want to start unrest leading to civil war in some second- or third-tier country? Easy! Call the IMF!

It couldn’t possibly be the fault of a people brainwashed to follow a moon god paving the way to war could it? Nah.

“No mention of Isis.”

Or of Obama’s policy of supporting Muslim Brotherhood takeovers, and providing train and equip support in Syria.

Or of the brutal oppressive tactics socialist Ba’ath Party in Syria.

Or of Turkey’s Imperial strategy to use jihadi mercenaries to extend its influence and borders.

Only what serves the narrative, to extend the Party’s power and interests.

“Syria itself won’t be able to finance its reconstruction and it remains to be seen if either of its allies Russia or Turkey will be willing to invest in Syria’s future.”

Turkey an ally of Syria? Invading, occupying and annexing is the new definition of alliance. Apparently it also includes the regular use of heavy artillery.

(Iran not mentioned)

typo... snow storms

It may have been a typo, but it was a particularly GOOD typo.

With the weather forecasters naming snowstorms and hyping every little flurry up, heck, even calling "flurries", "snow showers", yet again screwing up out language, your typo was very appropriate.

I'm going to start using "show storms". We should spread it around for our own little language change.

You are absolutely correct. Every weather event when it fits the narrative is presented as proof of global warming or climate change which can be absolutely anything.

So how come “climate change” helped cause Syria to go all to hell, but it didn’t make a bit of difference in Isreal?

Maybe the Syrians need to ban the yo-yo again

1933 Syrian Yo-yo Ban

It was on January 21st, 1933 that yo-yos were banned in Syria by then-Prime Minister Haqqi al-Azm.

At the time, there was a drought and severe cold disastrously affecting the local cattle. Superstitious Muslims believe this to be a divine punishment for the introduction of the yo-yo. They claimed that while people were praying for the rain to come down from above, the yo-yo goes down and before it reaches the ground, it returns to the user's hand with a subtle tug of the string. According to them, this supposedly angered the heavens and brought on the drought as punishment.

The Muslim chiefs interviewed al-Azm, convincing him that yo-yos were evil, and so they were immediately banned. On January 21st, the police paraded the streets and confiscated yo-yos from anyone and everyone they see playing with them.

The ban has since been lifted after a long time, making it so that yo-yos are no longer illegal in Syria.

I think I remember a study that determined that global warming might cause temperatures to seem colder. Science is full of paradoxes, but don’t be fooled, Just because it seems colder doesn’t mean it’s not getting warmer.

It was one of the remedies to globull warming that contributed to the Arab Spring and the Syrian civil war...biofuels, particularly ethanol, diverted food to fuel, raising global prices for food staples.
