You are correct. This is a horrible idea. Those LSTs were designed cheap and quick for a one time use. It worked. Shallow Draft, run like hell to the beach and drop the doors and out come tanks and marines.

That’s nice; the Navy now has a 130 million dollar ship that can become a stationary target for LAND BASED ARTILLARY!

Good point. The plan up to this point had been to use Amphibious Assault Ships, which would stay over the horizon, and have helicopters and small boats carry the troops to shore.
