My uncle went in on D-Day... took shrapnel to the head on the beach.. had the presence of mind to keep his thumb moving so when the medics combed the beach he was found. He got a metal plate installed to keep his brain intact.. went on to fight in the battle of the Bulge... as I relay this I am reminded of my grand ‘Granny’, who told me these things about her firstborn son...
