WASHINGTON — Sen. Ted Cruz flew home from Mexico Thursday, amid outrage over his trip during a crisis-level storm in Texas — explaining he was only chaperoning his daughters and their friends on the flight.

The Republican lawmaker was seen getting back on a plane to the US on Thursday afternoon and issued a statement explaining that was not on a vacation himself, but was accompanying his daughters on a flight to theirs.

If it were a member of the State government I could understand. But he’s a US Senator, what could he possibly do to help the situation, other than just get in the way?

I’m not sure it s not a big deal.

It is probably a historically bad optic. Just tone deaf and so unnecessary

If a dem did it it would be much less of a problem.

Much less

And my question remains- where is The ‘president’ during this major disaster?

biden’s basically punting on this too. If Trump had done anything else besides being there by day 3 or 4, he’d have been crucified by the media.

This whole thing from top-down is one of the biggest screwups in a long, long time.

Heard that Austin has turned off water city-wide ‘until the pipes are fixed’. That’s probably going to spread all over the state. This could be unbelievably bad.

I think people were really caught flat-footed. I went to the supermarket on Saturday expecting it to be a madhouse, but it wasn’t. Fortunate for us, in that we could stock up, but I think a lot of people were blind-sided.

Biden called a lid on the day during this outrageous. Biden was playing Mario Cart during this impeach.

I left some supplies, MREs and heaters, at home. Didn’t expect it to get this insanely bad. I can get there, but it’s far, roads are bad, and gas is sold out everywhere so have to ration.

First thing I do when I buy or rent, and We’re military so that’s a lot, is looking for a fireplace. Then I put a supply of wood in the garage

The rest is easy. I never expect the government to heat my home in an emergency. That picture is Cruz heading for the tropics, pointing at his kids is the poster boy for what the government will do for you in an emergency

I know how to turn off my water supply at the street if I get a burst pipe. Have water filters and a two week supply of was a crackers behind a full pantry. I have a gas oven and stove just to live in luxury - I have coffee.

The government can go to Cancun for all they’re worth. And they can stay out of my business but they won’t

But the people who don’t think like that are screwed if they’re not dead. We’ll see over the next days.

The idiotic turning over of a quarter of our power to non functioning green energy will get glossed over as well but that’s much of the cause of this

He’s just escorting his kids but he has all that luggage? Looks like he was planning to stay awhile.

Agree, nothing more than symbolic help. But, I think, ANY political adviser would have told him not to make that trip, particularly if he could be seen in public. Sitting home, reading a novel, would have served him and the Republicans far better.

The optics of this are pretty horrible. We can’t afford to make mistakes but we’re notorious for making them.

Cancun is a special case, it is an island and relatively safe.
It’s the only place I’d go in Mexico today

Whoops, I mixed up cancun and cozumel. Cozumel is the island that is relatively safe. I wouldn’t go to Cancun. Cozumel is close to Cancun

Only because the media is making a big deal about it.

Besides what can he do? Do a photo-op with the governor?

How do we know he didn't call Greg Abbott and ask if there was something he could to to help out only to be told "nothing."

We don't know. I am not going to do a blame-game like the lamestreamers.

This is like the pics of John Kerry parasailing at Martha’s Vinyard. Shows elitism and looks very bad especially during a major crisis in Texas. I know people whose houses flooded, have been without power for going on 4 days with Temps ranging as low as Zero. You ask what could he do? He could be on the horn demanding answers and using this crisis to point Biden’s non response. Don’t think the libs would be trashing Trump if he was not showing a response.

You need real help if you think this is a media creation. Places are going down hard, and it’s still freezing. When the thaw comes this weekend pipes will be going even more and there could be a state-wide water fiasco.

According to the other article he was originally planning on basking in the Cancun sun Wednesday through Saturday. Just saying.

“Cruz’s statement contradicted reports that the senator, who appeared to be accompanied by his wife, had originally been booked to return on Saturday, before hastily changing his flight on Thursday morning.”
