Half of Texas Wind Turbines Freeze, Hurting Electricity Output
Brietbart ^ | Febuary 15.2021 | JOEL B. POLLAK

Posted on 02/15/2021 7:20:08 AM PST by Hojczyk

Nearly half of the wind turbines in the state of Texas froze in recent winter weather, hurting state power supplies, according to state authorities.

Nearly half of Texas’ installed wind power generation capacity has been offline because of frozen wind turbines in West Texas, according to Texas grid operators.

Wind farms across the state generate up to a combined 25,100 megawatts of energy. But unusually moist winter conditions in West Texas brought on by the weekend’s freezing rain and historically low temperatures have iced many of those wind turbines to a halt.

As of Sunday morning, those iced turbines comprise 12,000 megawatts of Texas’ installed wind generation capacity, although those West Texas turbines don’t typically spin to their full generation cap

The outlet noted that the loss of power was largely offset by the fact that the remaining turbines were spinning quickly because of strong winter storm winds.

Texas isn’t an island in the ring of fire.
You’re a fear mongering sissy.
I live close to Limerick Nuclear, and I am not remotely scared.

Don’t worry the global warming crowd will show, with made up pretzel logic, that this winter weather is being heavily influenced and caused by global warming.

Fukushima - Built in an earthquake zone, built near the ocean, not designed for a tsunami, not enough generator or battery backup. A cost-saving invitation for disaster.

Solar panels LOVE the cold. They work better

Why ? It’s like superconductors

The lattice vibrates less at lower temperatures in the electrons can pass through more easily with less resistance

Wind is the purview of giant utilities ; the generators are 400 feet tall and about 2 MW

Any homeowner , any business can use about 25% of one of their roofs and put enough solar panels on to generate all of their electricity on an annual basis and have no electric bill

If the utility doesn’t want to play ball and won’t net meter- you can always get batteries and tell them to take their wires and go home

i’ve got a wood stove in the house, a wood stove and fireplace in a cabin out back behind the house, a custom built concrete block dual chambered smoker for hanging and slow cooking meat, a custom built concrete block whole hog smoker with rotating spit and a shed that has at least 10 cords of firewood stored in it at all times... all of which sits in 10 acres of woods surrounded by another couple of thousands of acres of woods... firewood is easily accessible and free for me...

Here in the US, spent fuel rods spent all their time in the spent fuel pool on the plant site. In France, after some time the fuel rods are reprocessed to separate the recoverable fissile to be re-used and the fission products which go to the glass melter. I have professional experience with the process (used to work for Nukem GmbH).

I have one wood burning masonry fireplace in the den I am sitting in right now. I only burn it a few days a year: Christmas and other special occasions.

I seem to generate enough firewood off of my own property just from trees that fall down, break, winter kill, etc every year.
Now, when I accumulate more than I will need I fill up my Tacoma, take a picture and post it on my towns Facebook page.
$100 CASH for p/u truck load of firewood delivered TODAY.
The most recent time(last October)it sold within 6 minutes. A new record.

A. Don't build nuke plants in an earthquake and/or tsunami zone.

B. If you break "A", at least put the flipping diesel backup generator and the fuel supply for same a safe distance away.

C. Build modern designs that are more fault-tolerant instead of 1960's crap that causes major ecological disaster if they can't start their diesel generators for emergency cooling.

Those guys are way ahead of you, pal. As you noted, Global Warming cannot explain these unusual cold spells. So “Global Warming” is out as the monster under the bed.

It’s “Climate Change” that threatens us now. Too cold? It’s Climate Change! We must spend billions to fix it. Too hot? It’s Climate Change! We must spend billions to fix it.

One size fits all.

Fukushima shows the folly of running fifty year old reactors based on sixty to seventy year old designs.🤔

i think the clear thing to drevie from all this, is that for the best outcome and reliability, you need more than one type of energy system around that works

redundancy

The Texas grid only has a couple of interconnects to the other multistate grids in the US, and one to Mexico.

Moving electricity is the domain of transmission engineers, who must answer to the politicians.

Which is why even the scientists don't always trust other scientists, nor agree with them.

We’ve been hit by rolling blackouts six times so far today. First time my ISP has been up.

Somebody in gov’t needs to become unemployed over this.

The choice was made years ago to shift towards green energy in Texas.

T. Boone Pickens lobbied hard for that so if there is a villain, his estate would be one.
