Nearly half of the wind turbines in the state of Texas froze in recent winter weather, hurting state power supplies, according to state authorities.
Nearly half of Texas’ installed wind power generation capacity has been offline because of frozen wind turbines in West Texas, according to Texas grid operators.
Wind farms across the state generate up to a combined 25,100 megawatts of energy. But unusually moist winter conditions in West Texas brought on by the weekend’s freezing rain and historically low temperatures have iced many of those wind turbines to a halt.
As of Sunday morning, those iced turbines comprise 12,000 megawatts of Texas’ installed wind generation capacity, although those West Texas turbines don’t typically spin to their full generation cap
The outlet noted that the loss of power was largely offset by the fact that the remaining turbines were spinning quickly because of strong winter storm winds.

It’s an abusive relationship, just when you need it most on a cold morning it won’t roll over.
“Still, wind and solar are a joke.”
AND, they’re made in China.
But unusually moist winter conditions in West Texas brought on by the weekend’s freezing rain and historically low temperatures have iced many of those wind turbines to a halt.
If it was not so tragic it would be funny. I wonder how many people will die of exposure in the name of “green energy” during this very unusual cold spell (caused by Global Warming)?
Ask the people of Fukushima. How’s that working out for them?
GE, we bring good things to life! (death)
All they had to do was build cooling towers to the nearby hills. But oh no! That was too expensive!
Do you know where your nearest spent fuel rods are?
It behooves you to know. You might be next.
That’s for sure.
Oh, wait. Maybe...
Episode 1: Granny gets arrested on domestic terrorism charges and is sent to Gitmo.
Episode 2: The Feds swoop in and seize all of the Clampett’s guns. The Feds shoot the Clampett’s dog just for the hell of it..
Episode 3: California forces Jed to trade his old truck in for a Tesla.
Yes, it could work!
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. This report of freezing turbines came up while I was reading how Bill Gates justifies his private jet.
Here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-56042029
Includes: “He uses private jets, but insists that they are powered by biofuels - aviation fuels made from plant products”.
No mention of the CO2 generated when constructing the plane, ground operations, etc. He of all people should just sit behind a big screen, camera and mic. and never need to travel again.
NYS won’t even take advantage of clean coal.
Too bad a lot of innocents are being made to suffer the foolishness of liberal dictates.
I wonder how many liberal politicians who put this in place, are having their lives adversely affected by it, i.e no power? I bet none.
...I was born and grew up in Upstate NY...not the Bill and Hillary Clinton idea of “upstate” but the real upstate...north of Albany....spent many miserable winters up there....that’s why we now live in Texas...although it is miserable cold down here now...wind chill is about 2 degrees below zero....
Something doesn’t make sense. 25 megawatts is nothing.
A base load power plant is 500 megawatts and more. How come the loss of 12 megawatts all of a sudden created an issue?
Episode 4. Ellie May is canceled because she likes men.
Episode 5. Jane Hathaway is elevated to bank president because she doesn’t.
Well played!
I rent solar panels (”utility solar”). Cost ranges from slightly cheaper to 2.75x that of regular electric, averaging about 1.5x. Supply covers from 10-40%, average 20% of use.
_I’m_ ok with sketchy reliability (view it as a challenge), but most people (rest of family) would freak if we had to rely on it.
Generation IV reactors, try looking into them.
Neither does a coal fire ... and it provides red dog for drive ways, cinders for winter roads (D’ya MISS ‘em yet?) and lower electric bills with a MASSIVE high paying work force ...
Already being done...with clean energy helicopters.

It has reasonable remote uses, but will never surpass what we have now.
