The president of France, Emmanuel Macron has blasted Twitter and Facebook for de-platforming the former US president and their arbitrary implementation of content moderation policies. Other leaders, including Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, have also condemned the social media companies.
In an interview, the French president talked about the recent censorship and removal of Trump following the January 6 riots. The social media companies removed Trump for allegedly “inciting” the riots.
“We are very upset here in Paris [about the Capitol attack]. But at the same time, we were very upset, as well, by the fact that a few hours later, all the platforms … which helped President Trump to be so efficient, sometimes, to promote the same demonstrations, a few hours before, at the very second when they were sure that he was over, [out] of the power, suddenly cut the mic,” Macron said.
He argued that decisions as critical as silencing an elected leader should not be made by private companies.
“I don’t want to live in a democracy where the key decisions and the decision to, at a point of time, to cut your mic … is decided by a private player, a private social network,” he continued. “I want it to be decided by a law voted [on] by your representative, or by a regulation — a governance democratically discussed and approved by democratic leaders.”
Mainstream social media platforms seem to implement content moderation policies depending on their political ideologies.

When you step back and view this from far above it should frighten all of us that the European leftists are terrified of American leftists.
Wow. Just wow.
Actually, it sounds like he’s ok with censorship, he just wants government to do it and not Twitter.
A little late to make a difference. This is just grandstanding.
When you step back and view this from far above it should frighten all of us that the European leftists are terrified of American leftists.

It’s because these politicians realize they’re no longer in control. Big Tech is in control and it can destroy any one of them. Big Tech was the Left’s guard dog, only the guard dog is now growling at its owner.
Wow a true socialist is warning of censorship. That just tells you how bad it is. Macron hasn’t crossed over to communism yet like our president has.
So Macron, ban 'em from the internet in France, show 'em how it's done!
Its both a long-term national security issue, and political issue.
Why would any foreign nation give the US deep-state, intelligence agencies, and its controlled tech oligarchs control over its social media - especially now they have shown how quickly they will abuse that power?
For politicians who still think in 20th century terms - would you allow a foreign superpower control your newspapers and TV stations?
“Ally” or not - I would shut them down immediately
This is a lot like how many rinos vote. Wait to see how the voting is going and then vote a way they know their constituents want knowing the bill won’t pass anyway but can say they tried even though.
Macron is really upset about the tech companies because he knows most people feel their way but ultimately does nothing about it.
Yup.
And we used to think European leftists were the real communists.
Right now, not even the Bolsheviks and the Stalinist's of the October Revolution in Russia in 1917 come even close to the chilling dictatorship, and reign of terror unleashed by the evil Dementia Joe Dem regime together with the fake news media and Big US Tech companies in conjunction with the American NKVD aka the FBI.
Eventually, it may have to come to a liberation war against this evil dictatorship if things continue this way.
I think that is part of it, but it is more complex strategically.
I have always believed after decades of observation and inside knowledge of NATO that European socialist have always been confident that they could play “socialism” and not suffer any dire consequences because stoic and steadfast Uncle Sam with the big wallet was always there.
Europe is like the wimpy kid on the playground who is confident because his big brother is on the playground and nobody wants to tangle with him.
Many in Europe and throughout the world are horrified at what they are watching in the US. A questionable election, a reversal of the freedoms that made us strong, military forces in our capital, and a very weak administration buoyed by the big tech/media complex.
Reading some of the peanut gallery comments in the European and Asian media is insightful right now. Even some of the “Orange Man Bad” crowd appears to miss him already.
Nope. That's not what he said.
You can't have some frat boy from Harvard (Zuckerberg), or some long haired hippy from Hollywood(Dorsey) decide on how a sitting President of any country can and cant address the people of that country, totally according to their own crazy whims and totally outside any laws passed by any parliament or congress, is what he is saying.
Pure treason I call it. People have been hanged for less.
All these foreign leaders suddenly realized it could be done to them too.
Big Tech overplayed it’s hand.
kind of weird when world leaders defends “Trump” rights.
And the republican party doesn’t.
Kind of twisted.
Let's just say Mitch McConnell is not the bravest or most principled man I have seen.
Neither is Marco Rubio or Ben Sasse.
We are living in weird times. If any of us went back a year and half or so and told ourselves what would happen I doubt many of us would believe it even from our future selves.
Yes.
Right now, every effort must be made to get the big US tech companies banned or hobbled or defanged in as many foreign countries as possible.
Uganda, Burma and a few other countries have already started taking action.
Now if we could get the EU and the African Union to collectively bring down the hammer on those Stalinist US companies, the world would suddenly look a lot better.
