After nearly a year of online learning, parents in the Washington region were thrilled to hear announcements from public schools, some of them tumbling out rapid-fire in recent days, that in-person learning will resume next month for students who choose it.
But families quickly discovered that in-person learning will not necessarily mean sitting in a classroom and being taught by a teacher. Instead, school officials in Maryland and Virginia have been hiring “classroom monitors” who will fill out school staffing — in some cases supervising classrooms as students continue to do online lessons.
For some parents, it’s the latest disappointment in pandemic-era learning: more virtual learning, no teacher in the room.
“Kids are going to be doing the same thing that doesn’t work, only in a new location,” said Jenna Hamilton, a mother of two school-age children in Fairfax County Public Schools. “They’re being warehoused in a room to watch their teacher on a screen yet again, with effectively a babysitter sitting there.”

No teacher in the room but teachers “working” from home drawing full salaries and benefits as well as continuing to “earn” retirement longevity and pay raises. Ain’t life grand!
Public schools have existed for 150 years, while humans have inhabited the earth for millennia.
How did kids survive in the olden days?
How are they being harmed now?
Here’s a hint: They’re not.
JFK’s true legacy is teacher and other government worker unions. They are the single greatest cause of tax increases and have been the tip of the socialist spear that is tearing apart American culture.
Can anyone believe this bullshit?
There are several counties in the DC area that plan to have teachers park their ass at home while the students are in the classroom.
And, one wonders, how does this work? Because the teachers unions want the government to hire A MONITOR FOR THE CLASSROOM DURING THE DAY!!
I’m sorry, but doesn’t this just a little bit smack OF ELITISM??
Private school teachers show up. Public—no. The students are starting to slowly return to school but with subs—teachers won’t come back in CA and are streamed to a screen on the wall or to the students’ laptops.
I am in CA. people out walking their dog ALONE, OUTSIDE no one around with the damn mask on absurdity!! We are surrounded by IDIOTS in CA.!! Jogging with masks on how in the hell can anyone breath while jogging with a mask on!!!
Teacher unions realize that they have one obstacle at work that requires them to put in effort. The solution to that “problem” is to install classroom monitors so they won’t have to supervise the kids.
I find video instruction to be fantastic tool. Some tutorials I have used extensively and have allowed me to do things I never would have attempted without these video tutorials. Some of which includes designing and building a remote controlled optical observatory and diagnosing/repairing solid state amplifiers.
I see the entire teaching world going video remote. There will always be some hands on teaching, but for the most part, video is real hard to beat, regardless if it’s a lecture or techniques to precisely polar align an equatorial mounted telescope. I would say video/remote teaching is going to get very big regardless of viruses or pandemics.
Yep. Well said!
Any teacher not back in the classroom should be laid off or even fired. Let them fend for themselves like the rest of us instead of being paid month-after-month to stay home or wherever they might travel. Over a year of taxpayer paid vacation and count.

I teach college media/art classes. We were going to have to face this nonsense in a Bay-area college in November and December.
You try teaching with a face mask, face shield and gloves for 6 to 8 hours straight. You might call me a pussy, but I can’t wear that garbage for more than 2 to 3 minutes before the sweat starts flowing down the face, the face shield and glasses fog up, and the mask acne appears. This along with the severe pain I still get for the skin cancer treatment I had on my nose last year. Any mask rubs my nose raw to bleeding if worn for more than few minutes.
And that doesn’t even count the double lessons required, and the total lack of 2-way communications for those masked - as both the teacher and student.
For me, any one speaking out of a mask sounds like a Peanuts parent or Kenny from South Park.
Nope. Teaching with Zoom, discord and a good LMS is much more effective, especially as I have my own personal streaming studio to teach from.
And in some states and districts across the country, schools have been opened since May 2020. Here in NJ, many school districts have been opened, Hybrid model, since September 8.
My district (in Camden County) opened for two weeks (6 school days) in the middle of November only to close until January 19 when it again opened on the Hybrid model. And only opened because Trump was gone.
Private schools here have been opened since September 8th.
My district requires masks and face shields and it sucks! I’d rather be teaching from home, mask and shield free, online. It’s not like the kids are getting any better of an education.
There’s a bright side, imo. The kids are only in school for 4 hours, 2 days/week per cohort. The rest is online and in my professional opinion, that works out in the students favor.
Is there a reason for the schools to be closed or operating on a hybrid schedule? NOPE, imo. However, it has opened a lot of eyes to our educational system.
NJ kids will be behind the kids in many states that opened in May and Sept., imo. My district only opened in Nov for 6 days then shut down again until a couple weeks ago. Our kids will suffer, imo.
I’m happy my kids are grown and out of school, not dealing with this nonsense. My youngest was in senior year college when the shut down happened and it was awful but she’s fine now. No in person graduation, graduation party delayed and modified, but fine. It works out most of the time.
Online learning sucks for the students, parents, and teachers right now but the potential is phenomenal...an entire leftist/communist institution can be destroyed and we’re morons if we don’t take advantage of that.
Same in NJ and probably every liberal state.
Saw many occupants in cars in masks today. Many walking outside in masks. It’s insane. But it’s not happening in some states.
The problem with private school is cost. The Catholic Church used to be able to use nuns and priests to teach at Catholic Schools but they can't do that anymore.
I think neighborhoods should just team up and home school the kids hell they have been doing it for a year now organize with you neighbors and get your kids out of these commie institutions!!
