Agreed. This article or another that I read said these were already underperforming stores. At some point, a business has to listen to the mathematics. Politicians don’t care. They expected krogers to siphon money from profitable stores around the country, so the politicians could look caring and compassionate to their voters. That didn’t fly.

It's a public company and they have a responsibility to their shareholders, not just their employees and the community. That means sometimes they have to make difficult choices. It does not necessarily mean they can't be compassionate, but they also can't make stupid decisions either. If those stores were marginally profitable or maybe break-even, that'd be one thing. But no sense sinking cash into a rathole.
