"If you're Trump this is rather a no brainer," wrote Twitter user Janet Mullins Grisson, in regards to Trump representing himself.

"With Senate Rs aka the jury on the record that impeaching former president is unconstitutional why spend money on lawyers?"

The news of the legal shakeup online has garnered many similar responses, especially with the impeachment trial set to begin the week of February 8.

No one should represent Trump. It is an illegal, illegitimate “trial” that makes a mockery of the Constitution, and Trump should say exactly that and then ignore it.

They are wrong. He can only be barred from office if he is convicted of the impeachment charges. That takes a 2/3 vote.

The Senate has NO authority to hold a judicial proceeding on a private citizen. The only trial the Senate can hold is for impeachment of a current official. The Senate lost all authority to hold this trial at noon on January 20th. That is why John Roberts isn’t showing up. Even he can’t weasel through the absolute unconstitutional nature of this action by the Senate.

This is a 1 hour defense by a lawyer. Trump doesn’t need to say a word.

Exactly. They are already calling for "investigation and removal" of Cruz and Hawley. The left is fantasizing of using this sedition/insurrection charge to purge conservatives. And a few are trying to make it a reality. Many of us here would also be guilty of "inciting insurrection", because the dems say so. Demand election integrity? Push back against gun control? Criticize the regime? INSURRECTION!

The United States Constitution Article 1, Section 3, Clause 6

“The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present. ”

The United States Constitution Article 1, Section 3, Clause 7

“Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.”

The President of the United States is not being tried. Donald Trump lost the election. The Democrats made sure of that. They ratified the Electoral College vote. Joe Biden was sworn in. They had enough military presence to INSURE that Trump is no longer president.

Since Donald Trump is no longer President, the US Senate has no, repeat NO, judicial authority over him to pass judgement. If he committed a crime, the only way he can suffer any judicial penalty is by the Department of Justice. The Constitution spells that out as clearly as anything can be.

Any Senator who votes to continue this charade should be recalled by his state and removed. Their actions are CLEARLY unconstitutional. There is nothing, NOTHING in the Constitution about a simple majority vote barring him from holding office again. It is either 2/3 of members present or nothing. But even if they do that with Senator Leahy presiding, it is an illegal trial. You can’t try a private citizen in the United States Senate.

Trump’s now former lawyers had the right strategy—the trial is unconstitutional!! The goal right now is simply to avoid conviction and disqualification from running for office!

Later, Trump and his allies can dig out all the incontrovertible evidence that the election was stolen, and use it in an appropriate manner!!!! Start with what is going on in the Arizona legislature!

If that is the case, then better never. Better to quietly get through this pony show, and live to fight another day.

We know we have to work at the state level to strengthen election laws, and we know we have to primary RINOs. If we choose to fight now, then the RINOs will vote to impeach. Don’t rest too easily on that 45 vote count that Rand was able to conjure this week.

We have to be stragetic over tactical on this.

I don’t think even the likes of Justice Roberts would go down that hole when it comes up to the Supreme Court.

Robert's children are still minors. The Dems could arrange for his illegal adoption of them to be splayed across the front pages. More importantly, they could arrange for the children to be seized and deported back to Ireland. He knows that. Never underestimate how low the Dems will go.

There is a link to people “in the room” who went in and saw the mess first hand. They name a few names, Giuliani and Powell. He or she says that at the news conference Giuliani had drank at least 9 shots of booze the night before. He took over the proceedings, when he was supposed to talk a bit, hand it over to Sydney. It might be. I believe the impeachment states that Trump’s claims of a stolen election are what caused the “insurrection”. So providing evidence that it was stolen could kill two birds with one stone. I think they have to look at the evidence because they are accusing him and he has a right to a defense. Not like before when he was making claims and they simply refused to take the case. Now the case is already open.
