Media headline that Mitch McConnell announces he's willing to abandon the filibuster, jettisoning this 215-year-old protection for minority right based upon the promises of Democrats

Most of the time, Americans pay scant attention to the rules that the House and Senate choose to govern themselves. We laugh when the House decides to go for gender-neutral language, but none of us thinks that makes any real difference. However, in the Senate, "China" Mitch McConnell has paved the way for a rule change that will allow the Democrats to alter forever America's longstanding structure and enable them to become a permanent governing class.

From THE HILL

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) indicated on Monday night that a power-sharing deal could move forward after two Democrats reiterated they would not nix the 60-vote legislative filibuster.

"Today two Democratic Senators publicly confirmed they will not vote to end the legislative filibuster. They agree with President Biden's and my view that no Senate majority should destroy the right of future minorities of both parties to help shape legislation," McConnell said in a statement.

"The legislative filibuster was a key part of the foundation beneath the Senate's last 50-50 power-sharing agreement in 2001. With these assurances, I look forward to moving ahead with a power-sharing agreement modeled on that precedent," McConnell added.

[snip]

McConnell's comments come after Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) reiterated on Monday that they oppose nixing the 60-vote legislative filibuster.

"I do not support doing away with the filibuster under any condition. It's not who I am," Manchin told reporters.

Sinema's office also reiterated on Monday that she is still not supportive of nixing the filibuster after The Washington Post incorrectly suggested that she might be open to getting rid of the 60-vote hurdle.

Sinema is "against eliminating the filibuster, and she is not open to changing her mind about eliminating the filibuster," a spokesperson told the Post.

When it comes to Joe Manchin, except for protecting his state's oil and gas interests, the senator from West Virginia always talks conservative and then votes leftist.

Good. End it. Along with the traitorous GOP. Let it all go to hell. Only then will we have a chance at righting the Republic.

Wasn’t Andrea Widburg the one whose own newspaper put out a piece saying she made stuff up and was a liar? Yes, that was she.

“except for protecting his state’s oil and gas interests”

Manchin voted for Kavanaugh because he was one of the last 2 needed by Smitch, plus up for re-election back in 2018. He’s a savvy snake. Talks conservative only when he needs to due to the WV voter rolls which lean red. Sinema is quite the contrary. She leans a little to the libertarian side even though she looks far-left.

Well in McConnell’s defense (yeah I know it’s hard giving him the benefit of the doubt), what he wanted was a provision in the organizing rules for the new Senate agreeing to keep the filibuster. However, this provision itself could have been removed at any time democrats wanted on a simple majority vote. So my guess is since McConnell knew such a provision really wouldn’t have changed anything should the democrats decide to do away with the filibuster in the future. He figured just a “handshake” agreement with Manchin and Sinema provided as much (or as little) protection as a formal provision would have.

The Democrats promise to do something in exchange for the Republicans actually giving them something. Then later the Democrats find that it just isn’t possible to keep their promise and it will be for a lofty reason. (Gag)

McConnell, how many times does Lucy have to pull the football out from you before you get it? McConnell had better not give up the filibuster.

The circumstances of the 2020 election have caused a great deal of despair because many people who take their civic duties seriously have no reason not to conclude a) elections are rigged and b) most of the politicians blow anyways.

That is how I am reading it. The majority could just rewrite the rules and do away with it anyways.

This is Mitch’s job. To cave.

It’s why the GOP is defunct.

Things could be worse. You could be the maid assigned to change the sheets at their hotel.

Mitch probably wants that to happen literally, considering what I’ve heard about his proclivities.

But then again, the two Dems could change their mind after Schumer threatens them.

The US has blown right past banana republic and is now squarely in failed state territory.

Ok I am really confused here. Headlines on this story indicate the filibuster will be eliminated. Then the text of this article and others say two Democrats will not vote to end, so the filibuster remains. Which is it? Could someone please read the articles to make sense of this?

Dumb, dumb, dumb dumb. . . ."
