I was discussing this with my son today and I voiced my doubts over the success of a third party given past history of such. His response was that the timing and circumstances are quite different. He feels it will be successful. I guess we'll see!

The Republican Party replaced ineffective Whig Party during the Civil War. The Patriot Party just may replace the ineffective Republican Party because they refuse to confront Marxism.

That same argument goes for secession. Some of us are on board with that. Others say to think about the secession attempt in the 1800s. As your son says, the timing and circumstances are quite different now.
