I'm not holding out much hope for this country's future anyway. Socialism and Capitalism don't go together well.
Sure they do.
But you need a strong state to control what we have now, which is finance capitalism as opposed to industrial (productive) capitalism.
The government's first duty is to act on behalf of the people. It is perfectly possible to socialize essential functions (as has already been done with roads, electricity, water, and other things) AS LONG AS you prevent financialization of public sectors.
If you nationalize the hardware store, you are doing it wrong. If you permit powerful financial entities to cheat the people while bribing the Congress (health "insurance", for example), you are also doing it wrong.
What you absolutely cannot allow is exactly what we have now - a fundamentally libertarian regime which, because of its obsession with individual freedom, allows the existence of the Amazon-Washington Post-Facebook-Apple-Twitter to control the state while saying to the victims, "You are free to start your own Facebook".
It' s like a riff on Anatole France: "the rich and the poor are both free to sleep under bridges".
