President Joe Biden's new press secretary Jen Psaki promised to bring 'transparency and truth' back to the government - and told reporters that she respects the role they play during her first press briefing.
'I will just state because you gave me the opportunity I have deep respect for the role of a free and independent press in our democracy and for the role all of you play,' Psaki said.
It was a far cry from former President Donald Trump's and his White House press secretaries' war against the media, with Trump often calling reporters the 'enemy of the people.'

I dealt a lot with the French in the past. Here is my experience in dealing with them.
You are sitting across the table with you and they will lie to you. you know that they are lying to you. They know that you know that they are lying to you. And they lie anyway.
This is the French. Germans to some extent as well.

Newspeak. Trump had transparency. Obama didn’t, even though he said he was going to bring transparency. I file this under “fool me twice, shame on me.”
We’re back to politics as usual. Trump simply gave us a four year reprieve.
I can attest to the same thing. Add to this big businesses in Massachusetts. I don’t know what it is, but they do it. There are rules for you, and rules for them. If you violate a rule even partially, they come down on you, but if they violate egregiously, it is purposefully unnoticed.
The Chinese, universally, lie in business. It’s a pillar of business. The truth would kill China overnight.

I listened to an interview of her on NPR some days ago. She was asked if unlike the Trump Press Secretary (this was NPR after all) would she always tell the truth. She stated it would be her “Goal” to always tell the truth not that she would tell the truth. The NPR person either did not catch that or just went along with it.
