I hate it. To me, it conveys weakness, victimhood, and fear. I understand we do it for specific things:

  1. For thirty days (or a month) after the death of a current, former president, or president-elect.

  2. For ten days after the death of a current vice president, current or retired chief justice, or current Speaker of the House of Representatives.

  3. From the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a secretary of an executive or military department, a former vice president or a former

  4. Speaker of the House, the President Pro Tempore of the Senate,[70] or the governor of a state, territory, or possession.

  5. On the day of death and the day after for a Member of Congress.

  6. On Memorial Day until noon.

  7. Upon presidential proclamation, usually after the death of other notable figures or tragic events.

It is that last one a disagree with most vehemently.
