Why does it take 28 years to execute a murderer?
Just barely within living memory, it wasn’t always thus. On February 15, 1933, Giuseppe Zangara tried to shoot President-Elect Franklin Roosevelt, but instead hit Chicago mayor Cermak. Cermak lingered and died on March 6, 1933. Zangara’s attempted murder charge was changed to murder. He was executed on March 20, 1933.
