This sounds like a lot of BS, McConnell sent out a guide last week on how impeachment would have to work in the Senate. 100% of the Senators would have to vote to reconvene from the pro forma status. Rand Paul and Cruz already said no. So the soonest they could convene to hold a hearing would be 1 hour after Trump had already left office. There was an attempt to impeach someone who had left office, a judge I believe, but he beat the case so the attempt to impeach him after he left office was dropped. There has never been an attempt to remove someone from office when they are not in office. That would obviously face a serious court challenge. There is no precedence and even McConnell said he was not sure SCOTUS would even participate in something like that as it sets a dangerous precedent. An incoming President could question any act by his predecessor and then have him impeached if that party controlled the House and Senate. When you have both Turley and Dershowitz saying nothing Trump said incited a riot, it would be a hard case to sell. If Trump supporters saw a kangaroo trial, the GOP is finished and will go the way of the WHIG party.
I believe McConnell would personally love to purge Trump from the GOP. But he would be purging Trump's voter coalition along with Trump. Obviously GOP slight right conservatives and RINOS will remain, but the rest of the coalition will leave. We are not GOP. McConnell knows that and he knows there is nobody out there who can convince MAGA conservatives not to stay home in 2022 if they screw Trump over now. They will need to hold all their current seats and pick one up. They will need MAGA voters in 2022 and 2024. Trump controls a big portion of those voters.
I hope millions of people that registered as GOP prior to the election, change their registration to unaffiliated or independent. The GOP was crowing about all the new people they enrolled. It would be awesome to see them eating the same crow when millions of those people leave the GOP.
