That’s is a problem.

I live in a forest next to a State forest I northern Michigan.

I need Verizon........nearest cell tower to me is 10 miles away.

At&t doesn’t even reach me.

I’m screwed on this one.

There's an option, although it's limited. I lived in a weak signal area with AT&T. So they sent me a "Microcell" that attached to my router and basically extended the cell coverage within the house and into the yard a bit. Worked well. Moved, so I no longer use it.

The downside is you're not going to have much coverage outside the house. So driving to and from work, you'd be without a signal until you come into range of a cell tower.

Hey thanks.

I’ll keep that in mind.

Another option for you fringe-area folks is . . . . don’t build your life around a smartphone. My retirement BOL has zero signal, and I find I don’t miss the nasty little gadget at all. Have a cheap TracFone in the car for road emergencies, that’s all. I have to remember to charge it once a week or so because it never gets turned on.

Internet is Hughes satellite, which weaned me off of video, too. Sanity has returned. I read dead tree books now. Much more information per $$$, and unfiltered by Big Tech. The absence of corporate mind control in my life is seriously wonderful.

Unfortunately, that's no longer an option for ATT, unless you can get lucky and find an old one on ebay or something. And ATT never sent them to you, I had some buddies that got them and they were both charged $2-300 if I remember correctly. If you can find one, it should still work, although ATT no longer supports them so you're on your own. Also, they only had 3G versions, so you won't get 4G/LTE speeds. If you mostly manage half a bar of 4G from the tower, your phone will prioritize that crappy useless connection over staying on the full good connection on 3G. You could turn off your 4G in settings, but then you have to switch it on/off every time you leave home if you don't want to sit on 3G only.

You can buy cell boosters, where you install an antenna on your roof pointing at the closest tower, and then it connects to an antenna in the house for all the phones. This only works if you do have a weak signal, but it's consistently present. These also cost ~$100-150 for a 4G booster, and over $500 if you need a 5G booster.

ATT really tries to push you buying a phone that supports wifi-calling. And, I think most carriers charge extra for the service, so there you go. This is a charge ON TOP of you already paying for the data, they add the charge to allow the phone's functionality. I actually got lucky and got around this with some older phones, by installing a custom ROM I was able to ignore some of those carrier-enforced limitations. I've even NEVER gotten any of the missing-child/old person alerts, or even the Presidential ones. That wasn't my intent, but the custom ROM already had those striped out.

You can also download some apps (like Signal) that provide wifi calling, but most of those require the receiver to have the same app. I dunno how many will give you actual wifi calling, but I do know that Google Voice is/was supposed to start supporting that at some point, and I can confirm texting works on it when I have wifi but no cell data, but I have yet to have voice calls work. Could just be a setting though.
