if you can afford central Europe... Germany, Switzerland or Austria, offer rural towns with train connections that mean you can go anywhere. I am lucky to speak a few languages, so am also considering buying a nice little Atlantic view cottage in Spain. I have a cousin in southern Germany who lives comfortably on $2000 euro a month salary. Rents are still much cheaper than in US.

A friend of mine’s parents moved back to Spain last year. I’m not sure exactly what part they are living in. They live in a 4 bedroom apartment 4 blocks from the ocean. Their cost of living is way less than what it was here.
