I just read an excellent new book about it called “The Fighting Bunch”, and I highly recommend it. Nobody would talk much about it for years and years afterwards. The FBI tried to coax information from the locals, but came up empty. People were sick of the dirty politics, but it took the returning vets to finally set things right. The similarities with what is going on today is amazing, but that was one county....not entire states. Still, it took a lot of guts and determination to break the machine.
