Google Warned (Its) Scientists About Disclosing AI Research On Race, Gender, Facial Analysis
Newsmax News ^ | 12-23-2020

Alphabet Inc.'s Google this year moved to tighten control over its scientists' papers by launching a "sensitive topics" review, and in at least three cases requested authors refrain from casting its technology in a negative light, according to internal communications and interviews with researchers involved in the work.

Google's new review procedure asks that researchers consult with legal, policy and public relations teams before pursuing topics such as face and sentiment analysis and categorizations of race, gender or political affiliation, according to internal webpages explaining the policy.

"Advances in technology and the growing complexity of our external environment are increasingly leading to situations where seemingly inoffensive projects raise ethical, reputational, regulatory or legal issues," one of the pages for research staff stated. Reuters could not determine the date of the post, though three current employees said the policy began in June.

Google declined to comment for this story.

The "sensitive topics" process adds a round of scrutiny to Google's standard review of papers for pitfalls such as disclosing of trade secrets, eight current and former employees said.

For some projects, Google officials have intervened in later stages. A senior Google manager reviewing a study on content recommendation technology shortly before publication this summer told authors to "take great care to strike a positive tone," according to internal correspondence read to Reuters.

The manager added, "This doesn't mean we should hide from the real challenges" posed by the software.

Subsequent correspondence from a researcher to reviewers shows authors "updated to remove all references to Google products." A draft seen by Reuters had mentioned Google-owned YouTube.

Four staff researchers, including senior scientist Margaret Mitchell, said they believe Google is starting to interfere with crucial studies of potential technology harms.

AI is proving “racist,” and algorithms are being grossly tweaked to “correct” them, but the fixes don’t work right.

IBM recently got out of its AI facial analysis when they couldn’t make the arrived at results “work.”

Google got in trouble a couple of years ago when its search engine returned pictures of monkeys and gorillas when people searched for a certain racial group.

10: "I wonder if they can account for Pelosi style face lifts."

Google search would probably return pictures of ancient Egyptian mummies.

Bill Whittle did a masterful video recently called The Stolen Election Part II: Stoners and Reptiles

The whole video is worth watching, but his interpretation and presentation of the Big Tech interference in the election is critical. Near the end, if you go to the 14 minute mark of the video, he discusses a video, created for top level Google executives (and meant only for their eyes) that was leaked to the public called "The Selfish Ledger".

Bill Whittle calls it the most frightening thing he has yet seen from the Left, and I agree with him.

It describes how Google views our "ledger" to be compiled by the compilation of our online activities into a "fingerprint" of who and what we are, and likens it to our DNA that identifies us, and how they wish to alter that DNA-like "Ledger" to manipulate people to "think the right way".

Chilling.

Here's the thing-I am involved in AI endeavors in Medicine, and am fully onboard in finding ways to help improve patient care.

I understand that all technology can be a double-edged sword, but I believe the things it may be able to do to help out patient outcomes far outweigh the drawbacks that may be inherent in certain aspects of AI.

How Google wants to use AI is abhorrent, and should be roundly and loudly denounced.

We should not even allow Google in this country anymore, IMO. I think they are pure evil.

Watch that link or even this link to the entire leaked video "The Selfish Ledger" which is what Bill Whittle references (although I suggest watching his analysis to provide context):

Google Leaked Video: The Selfish Ledger (based on the genetic concept of "The Selfish Gene")
