USS Georgia Transits Strait of Hormuz
US Navy PR ^ | Dec 21, 2020 | Commander U.S. Naval Forces Central Command Public Affairs

MANAMA, Bahrain – The nuclear-power Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729) along with the guided-missile cruisers USS Port Royal (CG 73) and USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) transited the Strait of Hormuz entering the Arabian Gulf, Dec. 21.

Georgia’s presence in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations (AOO) demonstrates the U.S. Navy’s ability to sail and operate wherever international law allows.

As an inherently flexible maneuver force, capable of supporting routine and contingency operations, Georgia’s presence demonstrates the United States’ commitment to regional partners and maritime security with a full spectrum of capabilities to remain ready to defend against any threat at any time.

SSGNs are one of the most versatile platforms in the fleet, equipped with superior communications capabilities and the ability to carry up to 154 Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles. The platform can also be configured to host up to 66 Special Operations Forces.

The 5th Fleet AOO encompasses about 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. The expanse is comprised of 20 countries and includes three chokepoints, critical to the free flow of global commerce.

I thought the Ohio Class subs were retired. We should send two to Taiwan.

“Okay. So no difference in designation between Tomahawk subs and nuke subs (Tridents).”

There is. Boomers are SSBN. Cruise missile submarines are SSGN.

Okay. So no difference in designation between Tomahawk subs and nuke subs (Tridents). That is good.

No, they are different.

SS G N - guided missile (tomahawks)
SS B N - ballistic missile (nukes)

Well, the cruise missile boats are SSGNs and the ballistic missile boats are SSBNs.

The older ones were revamped as SSGN’s.

I believe that the “N” at the end of the vessel designation refers to the propulsion unit.

All of our subs are nuclear powered.

The last I heard the US Navy specifically does not comment on any armaments that may be nuclear. Even our aircraft carriers do not admit to having these weapons on board.

To admit it would cause political difficulties for many world governments, such as Korea and Japan.

Because we would never allow a ship with nuclear weapons to port in these countries.

We want Iran to KNOW that we have approx. 150 cruise missiles parked nearby AND that we could deliver a SEAL team any time we wish. Once the transit is over she will submerge and they can all worry about it.

You forgot the other 244 Tomahawks.

Yes, the 'N' means nuclear powered, I was more displaying the 'B' and 'G'. And yes, all US subs are nuke plants.

It's not whether they have nukes or not, designation goes by the capability of carrying our current nuclear arms.

Okay. But I thought a couple of our SSBN’s (Tridents) have converted some or all of their tubes to Tomahawks. Whatever they carry, that’s the joy of not knowing. Suck it CCP.
