The Hebrews prior to Babylon were sacrificing children to Baal, prostitution as a form of worship, etc. God said they were worse than the evil people that they had been sent in to destroy.
After the exile God restored them, and they never worshiped those idols again. Not that God WANTED them to be exiled in the first place, but He turned it into good.
