A lot of gas turbine development for aviation applications goes on at Shanghai Jiao Tung University, which is modeled after MIT. Jiao Tung University has its old campus in Shanghai; I’ve visited it and seen its AI department; at least as much as they allowed me to enter.
Jiao Tung University has a “new” campus that is well outside Shanghai; foreigners are not allowed to visit it, although a large three-dimensional model of its campus is displayed at the downtown campus. It is very big, similar in size to a land-grant university in the United States.
Testing is problematic for the Chinese because it gives them a chance to fail so they don’t do it. If you never test, you never fail.
The Chinese recently bought the Ukrainian gas turbine manufacturer and moved it and the personnel to China.
