Reading the various web sources, they were fighting a US-trained paramilitary force flown in from Afghanistan. Nothing else released, so far.
Supposedly family told they died in a military air crash. Or that was the publicly released explanation. Family might have been told the truth? IDK, of course.

This action reflects the intent of Kennedy's NSAM 57, which he did not manage to implement. Now Trump has implemented it, and Special Forces report directly to the SecDef, who is a bona-fide special operator himself. If there is a US military versus CIA thing happening in any form, what Trump has implemented makes perfect sense.
