We fought, we lost, there’s no honor in whining. It’s like I tell other Indians when they start that crap,go live in a teepee when it’s -20, when you get sick get a medicine man to pray over you. If you don’t want to do that, STFU and get with the modern world.
An old friend of mine, was born in West Virginia, coal mining territory.
As soon as he could, at a very young age, he began to work in the mine, because he simply wanted to be with, and follow his father.
What he knew of life, was the world around where he lived, and the people.
The harshness of his life and world, was normal, it was life.
The young lad was smart, learned what he could, and also somehow advanced to a point, that when WW-II came along, he made his way to the US Marine Corps training center on the east coast.
In the Marines, he learned aviation. After the war, that led him to Columbus, OH, where a lot of aircraft were built - North American plant.
I came to know him years later, in his retirement. He is a Christian, a very wise old man, and a real funny guy.
He worked in the lobby of a building downtown. Sometimes, he would begin to sing some song, some Christian -type of tune. His voice, though he kept the volume down, was magic.
Something in the music of his voice, just penetrated everything as if an unstoppable light that no wall could frustrate. I had never before encountered such a thing.
One day, in the summertime, he and I were standing in the open doorway of the building, along the sidewalk, and a car came along, filled with four guys - tough guys - culturally sure of themselves.
Suddenly, my friend stepped a bit further out onto the sidewalk, and as the car went by, this old gent yelled out:
“GET A JOB!”
That old guy had spotted them coming from a distance, observed their way, as it were, and as if coordinated by God, stepped out to, let’s say, give some guidance from providence.
It was a wonderful thing.
