Back in University, I had a die hard Jets fan across the hall. One weekend the Jets were favoured by 14. Near the end of the first quarter, they were down by 14, when the guy across the hall wanders in and starts going on about the Jets. I was keeping track of things by radio (it was the fall of ‘88) and when he asked me to bet, said no, and I said was he sure he wanted to bet, he was, and I said was he willing to give me the points, and he was. So I took the bet. I don’t remember if the Jets came back to win, but they sure didn’t cover. I think I only took him for $10—in part because it was pretty close to theft in my mind, but perhaps also because I didn’t want him to check into how the game was actually going.
