If you read carefully the many discussions on this topic, the National Security angle gets reasonably clear.

It looks like the CIA (and who knows who else) used this technology to tamper with foreign elections.

Now it has “blown back” to the US (leaving aside for a moment the question of who and how...)

Yup. That’s why they’re so desperate to hide all of this. I predict multiple flashpoints in multiple countries over what is going to be exposed, which IMHO is a good thing. This isn’t just about American elections getting hijacked.
