I’m pretty sure that a lawyer who “abandons” his client is subject to disbarment on ethical as well as professional grounds?

That may be the case is a criminal case and even that would require an attorney to not show up at a court proceeding or fail to file paperwork on time and do all of that with no notice to the client.

ehhh it depends. A lawyer can withdraw from a case if they do so through the proper methods.
