China's foreign ministry today has finally extended congratulations to US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris for winning the election on November 3.
'We have been paying attention to the domestic and international community's reaction to this US presidential election,' foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Friday at a regular daily briefing.
'We respect the choice of the American people. We extend congratulations to Mr Biden and Ms Harris. We understand the results of the US election will be determined according to US laws and procedures,' he added.
President Trump is still refusing to concede the presidential election to Biden, insisting the election is not over. He also claimed without proof that his 2.7million votes for him had been 'deleted'.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to congratulate Biden. Russia would only recognise a new US president on confirmation of 'official results', according to Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Biden, who will be the 46th US President, is also the most-voted for presidential candidate in US history, securing around 75 million ballots.
The 77-year-old crossed the finish line in the race to the White House after winning the state of Pennsylvania, giving him the necessary 270 electoral college votes.
