The number of laid off retain workers who have the mental ability to write computer programs (not “code”) is about 1 or 2 per million.

Why not train them all to become psychiatrists to go out on calls with the police?

(I'm not sure that the average Chicago retail worker can make change without the assistance of a computer -- never mind understand biochemistry.)

No, I don't think most retail workers can learn to code. In fact, not every Indian can learn to code. But if 1% of the population of India can, that's still 13.5 million people who can.

Employment of retail workers isn't the only post-Covid problem (and suburban COSTCO retail workers seem to be doing fine). What happens to Broadway and the urban restaurant industry, to begin with? The sectors that may be gone for a long time (perhaps forever) seem to be ones that are concentrated in urban environments and that employ predominantly Democrat workers.

AH this shit again?!!!!

Learn to to code! As they either outsource US jobs wholesale to India and at the same time import H1b workers from out of country to displace American workers.

But dont worry Middle America, when you lose your means of employment there is always opiates or putting your life on the line for one of their endless wars

Maybe pollsters need to get second careers as coders after the royal screwup they perpetrated this election season.

I’m guessing that if they had the ability and opportunity to get into IT then they wouldn’t be in retail to begin with.

Perfect example of equality of opportunity vs outcome.
Anyone can get everything they need for a programming career for practically free.
Few indeed can make a viable career of it, despite high demand.

This “coder” talk gets lots of play from the left. I get the impression the American leftest actually believes in 3 things that are required to run a country, cube farms full of managers, coders, and immi-grunts for the SLJ’s that nobody else would dare perform.

Losing your job at the foundry? Don’t worry you can learn to code. Towboats and barges don’t move raw materials and argricultural crops to points for shipment or processing; their future according to the leftists, is to go bellyup in support of the grande plan to retrain every man, woman, and child into the golden profession of Coder...

As if just anyone can learn to code.

But even if that fact was not enough to understand why Rahm is wrong:

Big tech companies are already “employing” AI to write code.

Simple plain English instructions can be given to an AI program and in those instructions told which coding language the code is wanted in, and the AI program generates the software.

Another AI program can be told to combine sets of coded instructions, even when those sets have been coded in different code languages. Such AI is already in use to re-code something from one code language to a different code language.

The big tech companies have already seen two AI coded apps programmed to talk to each other and then seen the two apps begin to talk back and forth in a language (form of exchange) they - the two apps - invented. And that form of exchange was quicker and more efficient.

Big tech is not merely replacing work and workers outside their own companies, they are on paths that will drastically reduce their own human employees in time, particularly those actually writing computer code. Their biggest set of employees will be the information manipulation people directing what information is to be collected, and how it is to be collected, and to what ends, with AI writing the code.

Coding by humans is going to become obsolete.

The South Asian programmers form a clique, more like a guild. If you are not one of them, good luck trying to get a job writing code.
