Sammamish Police are investigating potential mail theft after two garbage bags of mail, which included ballots, were found on the side of the road and several unopened ballots were found in incorrect mail boxes.

The City of Sammamish says USPS delivered about 90% of ballots to Sammamish residents on Thursday. Mail carriers were out delivering Amazon packages early Friday morning when they found two garbage bags of mail on the side of the road. There were several unopened ballots inside the bags of mail.

So with all these ‘ballot stories’, why do they always end up on the side of the road or in a ditch somewhere? Is this because the common denominator is that the ones stealing the ballots almost exclusively are working for the post office and they don’t have the wherewithal to dispose of them someplace more discrete? What is frightening about all this are the numbers... because for every incident that has been found, there have to a hundred that haven’t been found....

I don't know about that. There are go getters in the post office. Several years ago there was a mailman near where I live in WA who had not been delivering mail for years. He had been using a backhoe to bury it in his back yard.

This actually happens on a more frequent basis than people realize.

It’s the low IQ postal workers that do this. The smart ones have better methods for disposing of the mail they don’t want to deliver.

I think it's is because (and I had this problem 25 years ago) the USPS often hires certain types of letter carriers for reasons of diversity who sometimes can’t manage to complete their delivery runs during normal work hours. So their practice is to “stash” the leftover undelivered and collected mail somewhere so they can return to the local post office with an empty truck as proof they have finished their work. Then the next day, when there may sbe less mail, they will retrieve the stashed mail from the previous day and finish delivering/collecting it. Our carrier at the time - a mildly mentally handicapped white woman - was caught doing this multiple times.

I’m not 100% sure that ballots are being deliberately dumped in many of these cases - the new focus on vote fraud is just shedding light on incompetent practices that USPS carriers have been engaging in for a long time. I would recommend that if you are voting absentee, you at least drop off your ballot at a post office rather than trusting it to a carrier.
