Apparently it’s a water-damaged MacBook Pro. I can tell you that popping drives in and out of Windows laptops isn’t all that easy for the average schmuck. Lots of guts in a small space.
And from what I understand about Apple products, you don’t have much that is user-serviceable internally. I believe tinkering around inside a Mac voids the warranty.

While I believe the emails to be legit, the laptop repair story stinks to high heaven. I believe they were hacked.
