Well, good for the people there. I wonder if the borders changed at all? Russia and Turkey giving a “ stand down “ order?
( I saw a documentary on the previous civil war from 1992(?). It was interesting as it had interviews from combatants at the time and from 10 years after it ended, including Mosin Nagants being used.)
Will Putin get a Nobel Prize nomination?
I wonder if Egypt deploying their Naval Forces toward Turkey in recent days, was part of calculus that led to this cease fire?
An Armenian friend told me that the Turks are sending jihadis there who are blowing up women and children. And that beautiful church. Turkey and Iran itching to get involved/ or perhaps are already. Russia is supporting Armenia.
Used to be a Soviet Airborne division there. Wonder if it’s still there?
Erdogan may be the loser in this.
He egged on Azerbaijan to renew the fighting, and promised to lend support if they did, and they - Azerbaijan did initiate the renewed fighting, and Erdogan did provide military support to them.
For Erdogan it is religious.
He has a caliphate complex, thinking of himself as some Islamist version of a combination of Kemal Ataturk and the last of the Ottoman’s true - operational - Sultan and Caliph, Abdul-Hamid II (1876-1909).
Thinking of himself that way, he panders to Islamist sentiments in Azerbaijan concerning a small part of Azerbaijan that became a breakaway separatist area run by its Armenian majority. Azerbaijan is 90+% Muslim and Armenia next door is 90+% Christian, as is the disputed area of Nagorno-Karabakh.
To Erdogan, a wannabe Caliph, and to Islamists in Azerbaijan, the Christian Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh have no right to reject rule by the 90+% Muslims of Azerbaijan. They have no right to take any land once ever held by Muslims. Muslims are required to never allow any land they ever rule to be put in non Muslim hands, ever.
Recently in a speech in Turkey, Erdogan referred to Jerusalem telling his fellow Turks that “it is ours”.
I wish Turkey was out of NATO and the rest of NATO had no obligation to ever again protect Turkey for any reason.
