According to the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois, Michelle Obama is “Voluntarily inactive and not authorized to practice law - Last Registered Year: 1993”. I guess being an active lawyer is not a requirement to be a Supreme Court Justice, but I think it would be nice to have someone who has had legal experience more recently than 27 years ago. Her real qualification is that she is married to a former President of the United States, and by virtue of that is generally the perfect person for almost any important job. She isn’t Catholic, either, but I think that when Francis’ days run out, the College of Cardinals should elect her Pope.
Don’t believe there is a constitutional requirement that a supreme court justice has to be a lawyer. However Michelle could certainly fill, and that’s the correct term, the ugly seat on the supreme court held by RBG.
And wouldn't you just love to know why a Harvard Law graduate, the ne plus ultra of US law schools, voluntarily surrenders their law license?
And no, there is no requirement for a Supreme Court Justice to be a member of the bar.
Just as an aside, there is no requirement for the Speaker of the House to be a member of Congress.
