John W. Gardner > Quotes > Quotable Quote “An excellent plumber is infinitely more admirable than an incompetent philosopher. The society which scorns excellence in plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity, and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity, will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.” ― John W. Gardner, Excellence

Thank you. Excellent point by Mr. Gardner. I humbly submit Ben Franklin’s observation, somewhat in the same vein ‘’Don’t we know the worth of water when the well runs dry’’. When the water stops society clamors for it to be flowing again, clean and pure. I never heard anyone clamoring for more philosophy.

I would encourage any young person today that unless they
intend to get a medical degree or become a lawyer or a degree in an applied science learn plumbing. Aside from it’s humble nobility and life sustaining usefulness plumbers make damn good money.
