I could see someone feeling that soldiers who went to Vietnam got suckered (past tense).

Because the politicians didn’t intend to win it.

My thoughts exactly. I think IF (and that’s a big IF) he said something like this, it is because he hates war, especially an unnecessary war, and might feel that these soldiers got suckered into going. That is not a disparaging comment to the military, it a disparaging comment toward our government who decided to go into a way they couldn’t win.

Amen. My brother enlisted in the U.S. Army, and was eventually shipped to Vietnam. He was there '66-67 in the 25th Infantry Division stationed in Cu Chi. His letters were calm, talked about Operation this, and Operation that, guard duty, but nothing in detail. He never talked about any of the bad stuff during his time there. He died in 1995 at age 51.

We grew up on John Wayne war movies, and others made in the 50's. From the time my brother was a little boy, all he wanted to do was be a soldier. In school, while in class, he wasn't much for learning, and most of the time he was drawing stick figure soldiers fighting, along with tanks, and bombs exploding. He had the green Army men that he played, with, along with Cavalry and Indian Frontier sets. I never had a chance to ask him if he was ever disappointed by his actual experience during the three years he served. I'm sure he was disappointed at some point, but he never spoke about it. It was always my belief that our military could have won, had they been allowed to fight the war the way it should have been.
