Many don’t like Edison, he was by many accounts, ‘not a nice man’. But, in my opinion, his invention of the phonograph was very profound. Unlike the light bulb, which was a radical improvement on something humans had done for ages, light up the dark, or the telegraph, which just sent messages faster, the phonograph did something that humans had never before accomplished—record a fleeting sound.

We don’t really know what Lincoln’s or Washington’s voices sounded like and unless someone invents a time machine, we never will know. But we do know what Edison’s voice sounded like reciting ‘Mary had a Little Lamb’.

Edison sent people around the world to record the voices and sounds of the famous. The found the bugler who blew the same bugle to start the charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War.
