I am quite disturbed at that pathological level of self-hatred the West seems to have bred amongst its people. Has anything like this ever happened before? I feel certain it is very, very bad.

I have written quite a bit on this topic.
Bottom line: Every time you visit a tourist site showing a civilization that mysteriously disappeared with no evidence of natural calamity--you now know how it happened....
