“Ty Sheem Ha Sheen Walters”

I realize that Ty Sheem Ha Sheen didn’t name himself, but what was his mom thinking?

Why did she name him Ty Sheem Ha Sheen Walters? Here’s my guess: She liked the sound of the syllables. A doctor told me back in the 1970s that an unwed mother who showed up to a mjaor NYC hosptial to deliver her baby gave him the first name “Meconium. “ She heard the medical staff say the word in discussing her baby. “Meconium” is the word for a baby’s first bowel movement.

Today with so many Blacks taking on Muslim names, her ear probably like the sound of those kind of syllables, whether or not they made linguistic sense. In both cases, there is great excitement at getting syllables together that have not been together before. Doing so seems to be an art form, a way of distinguising oneself, but in the same way all one’s friends have distiinguised themselves in naming their babies. I hope that there isn’t a 50-year-old Meconium Jones is reading this.
