Austin has a large population of students and government bureaucrats, because it has universities and the state capitol.

Most cities with that combination are very far left, such as Madison, Wisconsin. Austin may be big enough to overcome that obstacle.

You make a very good point. At 2 million plus, Austin is nearly 10 times the size of Madison, so the leftist institutions have much less leverage.
