had a chain around the skid out the back of the truck to drag it close enough for the forks of the fork lift to grab it. It took 3 HOURS to find someone to walk over, take the end of the chain, and attach it to drag it back. Only a qualified UNION rigger is capable of touching a chain, the fork lift driver just sat there for the entire time doing NOTHING but watching me.

My parents had a delivery at the dock in Long Beach, CA (Shipworkers territory).

They pulled in and were backed up to the loading dock. My stepdad took all the tiedowns, etc. off and walked over to the guy standing at the warehouse door next to a forklift. Asked him to pull the load off so they could go to their next stop.

Guy said, "Sorry, I work warehouse, I am not ALLOWED to pull on to the dock at all. The loading doc guys just left for lunch."

An hour later a loading doc guy pulled up in a different fork lift, picked up the pallets, spun the fork around and placed the pallets at the door of the warehouse. Warehouse guy then pulled up and moved them into the warehouse.

Parents said the same thing - NEVER AGAIN!

I remember backing up to a dock and having to unload CO2 cylinders weighing ~280# each out of my pickup to the dock by myself while the fork lift guy sat and looked on refusing to help.

Backed into loading dock in NYC and had a guard tell me I couldn’t park there and pointed to the sign saying Commercial Vehicles only...I had my POV Ford 250 van with Virginia tags and I said ‘How do you not know this isn’t a Comm’ tag he basically gave me the ‘look’ and said if it isn’t NY CT or NJ it isn’t commercial on MY dock.

Really worked out well as we (the company I was delivering for) had a NY office and I got paid New York waiting time, they sent their man to unload and deliver.

All the aftermath of 9/11 and anthrax wasn’t ‘bad’ as a lot of places (like the Pentagon) had an offsite delivery set up so didn’t have to really mess around with the Pentagon etal.

As to New York, I wouldn’t take anything to the City unless I could take it to the Regional office, which worked out well.

Quite a bit of my stuff in that area was at night so I would pull up and LOUDLY ask who was ready to go on a break and have a couple of 20s in my hand with half a 50 in the load.

All sorts of vols to unload MY truck.

(Had a 50 ripped in half and whoever gave it to me got a whole 50)

Made much more money at the turn of the century - not just in volume but in actual base rate.
