I was running an Asphalt plant in NE Washington DC and had a steady stream of filling out the ‘I was looking’ cards.
Worst part was they would walk into my office and say ‘you not hiring are you’?
Asphalt Co, we were always ‘hiring’ so I would point to a truck coming out of the plant and tell him to go to the job and tell the foreman to call me.
99.99% of the time it was can’t today, will be in tomorrow...’Sign this?... Sure, tomorrow’
99.99% it was a no show.
Lest you think I was ‘hard on them’, I ALWAYS had a standing rule no matter where I worked...
“If a man shows up at 6 AM with his LUNCH, he has a job, sight unseen”
I learned how a Man is supposed to work at 18 when I worked on a rig in the oilfield for a year in the 70’s, hell if you took off both gloves for lunch you were fired, just in case something happened on the rig. I have made it a point to always be the first one on the job and last to leave my whole life.
