‘Simply unacceptable.’ Gavin Newsom says California rolling blackouts can’t happen again

In response to a weekend of power outages caused by a heat wave of triple-digit temperatures, and ahead of anticipated blackouts through Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a stark statement during a Monday press conference in response to the crisis: this can’t happen again.

Newsom said as governor, he was “ultimately accountable” for the energy failure that left some households without power on Friday and Saturday amid temperatures cruising past 100, and that he’d now “take responsibility to immediately address this issue and move forward to simply make sure this never happens again in the state of California.”

But he said he wasn’t alerted until Friday that California was at risk of rolling blackouts.

“Let me make this crystal clear,” Newsom said. “We failed to predict and plan these shortages, and that’s simply unacceptable.”

Californians up and down the state faced scorching heat this past weekend.

Didn’t Robert Palmer do something on this? A video, I think, entitled “Simply Unacceptable.”

I’m surprised that the pols aren’t trying to find ways to blame Governors Wilson, Deukmejian, and Reagan for all their woes...

We just purchased an EcoFlow River 370 power station. It is going to be delivered on Thursday. The auxiliary solar panels showed up yesterday.

Site is already sold out.

“Embrace the suck.”

My provider is Modesto Irrigation District. They are independent of Cal ISO.

They get 20% of their power from Don Pedro reservoir (downstream from Hetch Hetchy) and only 2% from Solar. Amazingly they get another 17% from wind contracts in OR and WA. 26% from fossil fuels. And the rest from “various”.

Fortunately the farmers need a lot of water right now and the dam turbines are working full time...so likely more than their annual 20% is coming from the dam right now.

They have surge capacity.

But they purchase and contract independent of the ISO.

Power needs tonight will be extraordinary. It’s 100+ deg throughout the state and only cooling to the high 70s and low 80s at night.

108 in my town with 26% humidity bring the heat index to over 115. No wind. Streets are easily over 200 deg.

They should have gone to Nuclear. Water is great when you have enough of it but it is back pocket generation. They need more base generation.

“Newsom pointed to the state’s shift to renewable resources as part of the reason for the supply shortage. Shutting down polluting gas power plants has created gaps in the state’s energy supply, he said.

While the state remains committed to a greener future, Newsom said, “We cannot sacrifice reliability” and promised that officials would be “much more aggressive … in making sure that is the case.”

Solar is going down now.

25% or more of the state’s supply.

Hang on.

To the tune of “Simply Irresistable”:

Simply unacceptable...
He’s a swine, there’s no telling where the power went...
The sun don’t shine, the wind just seems to be all spent...
He sells wine, but only cause his wineries exempt...

Simply unacceptable!

Sounds like California needs to build some natural gas-powered electricity plants. Especially with more globull warming around the corner.

I’m sure the Gov. will require the electric companies to provide additional wall outlets for existing customers and builders to install double the number of wall outlets for new builds to solve the electric shortage.

I don’t understand is the libtards that run the energy racket out there. They all want to reduce their carbon footprint and all that baloney. Methane basically produces carbon dioxide and water vapor when burned. It is a very clean fuel. Why don’t they just take the emissions from the power plants and sequester them in old, abandoned evil oil fields?

Oh come on Governor, simply call up Obama’s favorite alternate energy company, Solyndra and they will happily plug the energy gap. That is why he, Obama, funded them back in ‘09.

Oh, no one answers, hmmm, you say that line was disconnected? Oops, maybe you should check on the company contracted for that discontinued high-speed rail, surely now they have extra juice, right?

fine. keep the power on and let the system collapse. Every generating resource in the state will trip off line as will all of the interstate transmission lines serving California. The WHOLE f*cking state will go dark in 15 minutes. And stay dark for DAYS as the utilities isolate load centers and bring resources back on line in stages. If they do it too fast then the whole system collapses again.

Newsom is such a bleeping lying moron, typically referred to as a Democrat. Democrats have been pushing for more and more "renewable" energy and it is now at 33 GW (27 solar, 6 wind) out of the total 76 GW installed generating capacity in California.

But late afternoon all the solar and easily half of the wind is not producing. So now all you have is ~46 GW of which maybe 10% is out for maintenance, leaving ~41 GW. Peak demand was 44 GW on Sunday and will be higher during weekdays, so we're 3+ GW short, hence rolling blackouts.

These are known, reported figures, but he claims he had no idea this could happen? And Democrats are still pushing for more solar and wind and shutting down our one remaining nuclear facility.

Prattling leftist spewing just more words.

Time to do something has been for far too long.

Public Utilities have standards for maintaining their infrastructure with specified capacities. P&E has been allowed to be negligent - democrats have been in charge.

Cut Nuclear power, shut down coal plants, go “green” and expect us to have all the power in the world. Then claim it is unacceptable when there isn’t enough generations. What a bunch of fools!

Or just change the definition of “blackout”

Seems like racist terminology anyways...

We in Alberta are willing to sell them natural gas. Maybe we could quickly get approval for an XL#2

I thought they had predicted this “global climate change” for the last couple decades?
